Today’s Picture: The Last Supper (detail) by Plautilla Nelli
The Emotional Jesus: Troubled
Jesus wasn’t above worrying.
There were times he was troubled.
In this story from John’s Gospel we have Jesus talking at his last supper.
Often we are troubled when we are not in control,
we don’t know what is to happen, but we fear the worst.
When troubled it is helpful to be able to share our cares with someone we love.
In this case Jesus was able to share his troubles with his Beloved Disciple and be honest with him.
And Jesus eventually takes them to the Father in prayer in Gethsemane.
Have you troubles you need to share?
Are there others whose troubles you need to listen to?
Today’s Prayer
Preparation: Begin by stilling, then dedicating the time of prayer to God and asking God that all you think, feel and imagine are for the glory of God.
Gift: Ask for what you desire. Suggestion: That I may be in touch with my own troubles and be able to share them appropriately.
Setting: Consider the Bible passage below, you can imagine you are Simon Peter, the beloved disciple, Judas or one of the other disciples.
John 13:21-27 HCSB
When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit and testified,
“I assure you: One of you will betray Me!”
The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one He was speaking about.
One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved,
was reclining close beside Jesus Simon Peter motioned to him
to find out who it was He was talking about.
So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus replied,
“He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.”
When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.
After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him.
Therefore Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.”
Conversation: You may want to talk to Jesus about what troubles you.
Final Prayer: End with a formal prayer such as the Lord’s Prayer/Our Father.
