Today’s Scripture
Matthew 11:16-19 ESV
At that time: Jesus said to the crowd: ‘To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to their playmates, “We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.” ‘For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.” The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.’
Reflection
Some people are never satisfied! No matter what is going on they constantly seem to find fault. That’s what Jesus seems to be implying in today’s reading. Perhaps we know such people? Perhaps we ourselves are like this?
Ignatius of Loyola encourages us to be alert to what is positive and life-giving in our everyday circumstances, to look for the consolations God gives us, the thread of gold which is present in even the darkest situations. Indeed to make a daily habit of doing this.
Today you are invited to spend some listening out for and noticing the little moments of joy, of life, the moments where God is playing the flute and inviting you to dance. And to savour them.
