Today’s Scripture
Matthew 11: 28-30 (HCSB)
“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Reflection
The people Jesus was speaking to were feeling weighed down by trying to live up to their religious duties which were imposed on them by the leaders of their faith. Later in this passage Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for laying heavy burdens on the shoulders of the people.
So often Jesus is pulled up for not following some of the accepted rules, like eating wheat on the Sabbath. He reminds us that the commandments, customs and practices are set in place to help us and not to bind us.
Would you want to belong to a club that made your life worse, not better?
In contrast, Jesus says MY yoke is easy, MY burden light. A life of faith is not without responsibilities, but a yoke is designed for two.
What might it mean to walk through your daily life so closely with Jesus?
How does this passage shed light on your practice of your faith and your attitudes towards what it involves? Might there be an invitation to greater freedom?
