Today’s Scripture

Isaiah 61, 1-2a, 10-11 (ESVUK)

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour…

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
    to sprout up before all the nations.

Reflection

The one whose birth we prepare to celebrate during Advent takes these words of the prophet Isaiah on his lips and says that they are fulfilled in him and by his presence among us (Luke 4:18,19). He brings good news for the oppressed, binds up those whose hearts are broken and speaks words of release and liberty to those who are bound. A bringer of salvation, of wholeness. In all of this declaring ‘the Lord’s favour’, the year of Jubilee.

Which of these mission strands of God’s anointed one speaks most to you and to those in your circle just now?

How are you drawn to respond to God about that?

How may God be inviting you to join with God in this mission of enhancing human dignity?

How do you respond to this good news of salvation?
