Self-Control
Self-Control is not a virtue that our modern generations take up with great delight. But nevertheless it is absolutely vital if we are to live a life of integrity. If we accept that we can be tempted to do things for short-term selfish delight which we know will hurt others, then we understand that we need be able to resist such temptations. Self-Control is necessary to avoid the vices which greed, lust and selfishness might put in our way. As the book of Wisdom tells us in today’s passage; wisdom “teaches us self-control, prudence, justice and courage”.

Scripture
Wisdom 8:2-7 NRSVACE
In praise of Wisdom
I loved her and sought her from my youth;
I desired to take her for my bride,
and became enamoured of her beauty.
She glorifies her noble birth by living with God,
and the Lord of all loves her.
For she is an initiate in the knowledge of God,
and an associate in his works.
If riches are a desirable possession in life,
what is richer than wisdom, the active cause of all things?
And if understanding is effective,
who more than she is fashioner of what exists?
And if anyone loves righteousness,
her labours are virtues;
for she teaches self-control and prudence,
justice and courage;
nothing in life is more profitable for mortals than these.
Conversation: Talk to Jesus in your own words as a friend
Final Prayer: End with a formal prayer such as the Lord’s Prayer/Our Father.
